"Radio is the theater of the mind; television is the theater of the mindless”
-Steve Allen
So, Russ Martin has
gone and got himself fired and
Live 105.3 is now the FAN. All right. Ehh, I met Russ a couple of times (although I am sure he has no idea who I am) and although I wasn't a big fan of his show (way too much dead air and not enough talent around him to make up for lack of show prep for my tastes), I am sure he will surface again at another station.
But I could be wrong and I will tell you why.
I love TV especially Good Day on Fox 4. Even though Megan won't return my calls anymore. But it's not a secret that I also loved Radio. Notice the capital R. When I worked for the Radio Advertising Bureau, that capital R was instilled in me from day 1. As a former exec once told me, why should TV be capitalized and not Radio? I have been on almost every station in DFW either doing traffic (Todd, todd the traffic god on Young Country 105.3), news (KZPS with John Boy and Billy) or jocking (used to love that Saturday night shift from 6p to 10p on 94.5 The Edge right before Jeff K's Edge Club). I have sold Radio commercial airtime (The Wolf) and I have taught hundreds of Radio salespeople how to write better Radio commercials. So let's just say that I know a little bit about the business.
And the business is dying.

There is an interesting
interview with marketing guru Seth Godin where he talks about his new book,
Tribes and how it applies to Radio stations and program directors and how they are marketing to a crowd trying to grab the biggest numbers for ratings instead of focusing and leading their "tribe". Love it or hate it, Sportsradio 1310 is good example of an entire station devoted to a tribe - The P1. They aren't nearly as daring as they used to be before they became part of the Cumulus nation but they have a successful foundation and will continue to have success as long as they try and build on it. Kidd Kraddick on KISS-FM has a tribe but that tribe all jumps in their SUV's and stops listening after 10am. Russ Martin has a tribe and his followers will find him wherever he lands but the rest of 105.3 continues to wander aimlessly. We'll see what the FAN can do.
But here is an example of where the FAIL is . The same Cumulus company that supports the Ticket has dropped local programming at night on 99.5 The WOLF. Now the WOLF was a station that had attitude and excitement and a distinct personality that all went down the drain about 4 years ago when they watered down the product to reach the biggest audience. Radio touts one of it's biggest strength as being local. How can you be local when you're piping in a syndicated show at night? How are you going to grow your local talent when you are voicetracking jocks from California. (Actually, it's the jocks here in DFW that are voice-tracking other stations-I'm looking directly at you Clear Channel-I wish the powers that be didn't make you do that.). Hey Radio, guess what? Teens aren't watching TV at night. They can watch their favorite TV show anytime they want. They are on their computers IM'ing their friends or texting or twittering and if you want to build up a base of listeners that might just grow with your station then you need to have a LOCAL PERSONALITY TALKING DIRECTLY TO THEM AT NIGHT! They will listen to the Radio at night while they are on the computer or in their cars. And give them the opportunity to have fun, do contests, call in requests, no really play requests not just a song that happens to be in the rotation on the playlist. Let the jocks do phoners, do silly voices, just give them room to breathe and you might be surprised at the response.
Here's what I wish. I wish that it were illegal again for a company to have more than 2 FM stations and 2 AM stations in one market. In fact, I wish you could only own one 1 FM and 1 AM. And if you owned a Radio station, you couldn't own a TV station. Or a newspaper. (Looking at you BELO. yah yah I know that the DMN split off to it's own little company, whatever!) Imagine that! New owners, new creativity, better salaries for on-air talent (believe me I know. Unless you are an established morning personality, the pay is crap!) New chances being taken, new local music being heard, better commercials on the air... You know, I get excited just thinking about it.
Come on Radio. There's still room in my heart for you.
